The following step-by-step directions will walk you through some tricks and techniques of how to install a screen door or storm door. Most front entry doors are 36 in. wide and require a 36-in. storm door.

There are few types of screen doors available on today’s market.

• A “full-view” storm door has removable screen and glass panels that you change each season.
• A “ventilating” storm door has glass panels that slide open or closed over the screen, much like a double-hung window.

Nearly every storm door sold is reversible. That is, you can install it with the hinge on either side. The manufacturer’s directions tell you how to do it. When you buy it, you do not have to specify which way the door must swing.

Just in case you wonder how to determine the direction the door swings, here are some tips. For a left-hand door swing, open the door and stand with your back to the hinges. If the door swing is on your left, it is a left-hand door.

It is frustrating to order a door and find that the hinges are on the wrong side when it arrives. Ordering the wrong door is an expensive mistake. The terms that describe the hinge position on a door are confusing: left-handed and right-handed. Stand with your back to the jamb that has the hinges. If the door is on your right, it’s right-handed. If the door is on your left, it’s left-handed.
